The Empowerment Project

Took a little detour for a side project. Back to editing this week.

The Empowerment Project was organized to showcase the power of Haiti, the effect the country has had historically on the world and luminaries that are working to help the country to restore it's former glory. Featuring work by Marc Baptiste, Presscott McDonald, Frank Isman and Kevin Sharpley, the project was curated by Myrdith Leon-McCormick.

The Empowerment project debuted at The Haiti Art Expo Presented by Plum TV along with its co-chairman Jerry Powers, Michael Capponi and Jeff Feldman. Hosted by Venus Williams, Haitian born World Welterweight Champion Boxer Andre Berto. The event kicked off during Art Basel Miami, one of the biggest art shows in the world.

The Empowerment Project sold many portraits including two purchased by Venus Williams. The project will be expanded and is currently being procured for development as a book.

Ok, so I really don't do reviews, but this time I couldn't hold back. Over the holidays I saw four great movies, three in theaters and one on demand (cable) and I was in heaven. So many times I get to the point where I feel where are the good movies, I mean really good movies and wonder if we'll ever have a time in Cinema again when real stories, real films trump profiting over 300 mill at the box office. Well that may never happen (read never happen). But luckily I think there will always be a hunger for strong stories, strong characters and multi-layered, multi-textual stories. Don't get me wrong, I love a fluff, popcorn, no brainer films that I forget the minute I leave the theater (Transformers, Avatar, "The Other Ones"...well maybe "The Other Ones" I did remember for a while, Ferrell and Whalberg were classic), but the films that stick with me, stay resting in my craw, irritating me, making me think about the process, the story, the concepts and ideas, the ones that stimulate me, my mind, those are the ones I prefer to drop my ten bucks on (or more depending on where, time, 3-D, IMax etc..) It's like those gifts you get that keep giving back, my money lasts and I can revisit over an over in my mind. Or want to revisit in the theater.

The four movies I saw over the holidays are all award contenders, "Black Swan", "True Grit", "The Tourist", and "The Town". The first two are from two of my favorite directors Darren Aronosky and The Cohen Brothers. Aronosky blew me away with his freshman effort, "Pi" and has been impressing me ever since, then the incredible "Requim for a Dream' and the quietly powerful "The Wrestler".

And the Cohen brothers have done it again. They are masters at regional characterizations, creating worlds inhabited by characters; people and places that ring true to whatever theme or genre they see fit to work in. They are masters. From Fargo's Minnesota Midwestern twang, to the southern drawl of "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", to the deadpan short, bluntness of the antagonist in "No Country for Old Men", the brothers Cohen have brought to life some of the most rememberable worlds and characters in Cinema and have won many awards for themselves and others in the process.

Black Swan soars. Natalie Portman is one of my favorite actresses and has been in some of my favorite films in her long career. She's been acting for many years because she started at such a young age. She lit the screen on fire in her first film The Proffesional at the age of twelve and hasn't looked back. Her nuanced performance in one of the best crime drama's ever "Heat" held its salt with some of the biggest in Hollywood history, Al Pacino, Robert Dinero, Val Kilmer and more. More about Heat when I get into The Town. In Black Swan, Natalie showcases an incredible versilitude, detailed and broad strokes of emotion, both required for the role. This is true of the ballet the film is based on and is true for the movie as well. What was great for me was the strength of the entire cast . For all of the strength Ms. Portman exuded for the her role, her rival character played by the wonderful Mila Kunis showcased a voracious theatrical appetite; expressing youthful zeal and recklessness coupled with raw passion, dogged determination and cutthroat cunning. Maybe a bit more on the other incredible performances later, but all were brilliant performances that balanced the main characters on a scale set ablaze with kerosene and gasoline.

But of course it was Mr. Aronosky's show and he is the one that pulled off the real balancing act. The story moves effortlessly between the power of the dance to the power of the character's souls or lack thereof. And the balance of the other characters and their relation to the main players. It is what keeps the viewer entranced, gripping or at least trying to grip to some semblance of what's real and what is not. Ultimately it's this balance that makes Black Swan such an incredible and powerful film. I was on the ride, on the ups and downs and still felt the motion long after getting off.

More on the other three films later and a film from last year that I only recently saw "Precious", which I feel is every bit as good as last years Academy award winner "Hurt Locker".

We just cut our first vignette utilizing footage from our documentary "Nou Sove" on the incredible Melky Jean:

It was done rather quick and with a more direct and deliberate approach due to time constraints. The documentary will be more stylized and we shot the original interview using two cameras with a lot of coverage, but until we edit this one fully we feel it drives the point home.

Next up Mr. Jimmy Jean Louis, who is the focal character of the film. His interview is incredible and his trailer vignette will showcase what the documentary is about. I'm extremely excited as the film shapes up and we head toward post production.

The Beach Chronicles WEVA Expo and premiere

The Orlando WEVA EXPO and the Miami Beach Cinematheque premieres were a tremendous success. If you made it out to the TBC premiere, you would have seen the latest vignette "Dirk Plays and Pays". The story is changing and there's much change to come. What has been seen will be unseen and the chronicles will unfold like dark matter, filling voids and creating questions, laying mysteries and clues exponentially. The next phase of the website is up and the latest vignette can be viewed online. The website will evolve with the story, changing to reveal clues, as there are clues in every facet of the story.

District 9 is a great film. I saw the short about 6 years ago and felt the same...knew it was destined. After living in South Africa for 8 months, so many details resonate and there are layers in the film that are hard to detect if one has never been/lived there. Quite nuanced.

KijiK does projects for high profile clients, but we also do projects that are low key and under the radar in terms of national visibility because we take on clients that we believe in. There are two projects that we are excited about and we feel are worth mentioning due to the strength of the stories and the visibility that we feel will come in the future from both.

One is quite high profile and we are extremely pleased to be a part of it. It's being tentatively called "Backstage of the Backstage" and is a series of videos and mini documentary hosted by John Legend's brother Vaughn Anthony. It's over three years of backstage footage from three years of touring with Mr. Legend and his brothers recounting of the incredible times and places they've seen. It coincides with the soon to be released album from Vaughn Anthony which I can say is going to blow people away.

The second project is called 64 Toy Pianos at Vizcaya. We recently covered this event put on by Wendy Mae Chambers, renowned for her stunning performance extravaganza's. The event took place at the amazing Vizcaya Italian Renaissance-style villa and formal gardens built in 1916 as the winter residence of industrialist James Deering. It's an historical landmark in Miami sprawling over acres of lush foliage and vista views of baroque art, sculptures, gazebo's and exotic plants set against the backdrop of Biscayne Bay. Scattered throughout this wonderland were 64 Toy (miniature) pianos each playing original compositions individually, in quartets and in tandem. We weren't to sure what to make of this project until the actual event and can say it was indeed a day to be remembered. The whimsical and sureal combination of the sprawling Alice in Wonderland garden and the full sized people playing toy pianos was both campy and brilliant. Loved it! We've decided to cut a bigger piece on this one, which should be done in the next couple of weeks.

Congratulations all those who have been nominated for Academy Awards. The hard work, determination and perseverance is justifiably rewarded through awards. This is the biggest, although others such as The Golden Globes, SAG, DGA, etc... are equally as important. You can see many of the winners in the films we chose in our top ten. Congratulations specially to Josh Brolin, who can be seen in our top ten, as well as on the blog for our documentary "Nou Sove".

And on the note of winning, these words of winning came our way today. We e-mailed internally, but sharing (which is not on there, but should be) is another way to win. So without further a due:

Developing a Winning Attitude

Here are some tips on developing a winning attitude. Check the items you are already practicing.

* Don't dwell on your problems. Decide what can be done today about each problem and take action. Repeat once per day.
* Don't focus on other people's faults. Focus on the only person you can change - yourself.
* Keep your perspective - don't exaggerate the importance of trivial issues.
* Accept any praise that others offer you. Simply say, "thank you."
* When you receive criticism, think it over, make changes if you think they are desirable, and then let it go.
* Don't compare yourself to others. You are a unique person with unique gifts.
* Recognize that others are only trying to get their needs met. They are not out to get you!
* Realize that everyone has insecurities. Give others the benefit of the doubt whenever possible.
* Don't think about all your problems at once. Trust that you can handle each problem individually.
* Don't dwell on the past. Forgive yourself for mistakes and move on.
* Always be ready to appreciate what others have to offer. Maintain a friendly and open attitude.
* Don't worry about appearing weak. Trust yourself to leave a situation if that is what is healthy for you.
* Don't worry that others are watching you and judging you all the time. Most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to do that!
* Don't hold grudges. They will make you mentally, physically and emotionally sick.
* Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
* Cultivate a network of family and friends. Devote time and energy to keeping those relationships healthy and happy.
* Don't become jealous of someone who has something you want. If you feel envious, decide what you want to achieve and pursue your goal.
* Keep an open mind when others give you advice. You can think it over and decide whether or not to take it later.
* When you need help, ask for it from the appropriate person.

The new year is a time to reflect. Old times, new times, what's ahead, what brought you to this point. Good or bad, bad or good. Hopefully the bad is the good bad and not the bad bad, but it all goes into making us anyway, doesn't it. And KijiK reflects too. What, KijiK is not a person you say. Why yes, KijiK is a collective. A collection of projects and culture that add up to a whole; the sum of all parts moving cohesively. So we're taking a moment to reflect on some of our alumni, those that have gone out into the media world and have done fine things. On this occasion we're pontificating upon two of our finest that rather or should I say we rather worked together on first projects. So without further a due, here's the two:

Marc Menard:

Marc is featured in our short film and webisode series LIFELINE, which incidentally is being developed into a feature film. You saw him first (not really first, but maybe we got sloppy seconds or thirds)with us. You can now see him in one of the new episodes of "Lost" on NBC. So congrats on that sir and we will welcome you back home soon for some of our big projects on the horizon (if you look hard enough, you can see which ones on one of our sites).

Arlene Tur:

The lovely Arlene Tur is the hostess of our web series "Playing as Locals". She has also been featured on E!, The Food Network and last year on Grey's Anatomy. But you can see her now on the hit series "Crash" on the STARZ network. Of course we will be bringing her back into the fold as well, but for now Congrats, you deserve it.

This is the first in our Alumn throwback/giveback, but definitely is not the last. Look through our sites and in our upcoming projects. The KijiK star train keeps on rollin. Till next time...

So it look s like we're headed to Haiti for the second in our "Sove Nou" Trilogy "Nou Sove". Originally it was to be with Jimmy Jean Louis from the TV show "Heroes" to go to where he was born and many of the places that have been affected by disasters both natural and man made over the past couple of years, such as the hurricanes that devastated the country last and this year. And more recently the schools that collapsed, but now it looks as if many from Hollywood will be there in a movement called Hollywood for Haiti. This is not to be confused with Jimmy's non profit Hollywood Unites for Haiti which KijiK will be partnering with for many projects. We're creating a separate blog and website to show what we're doing on the ground while in Haiti and the progression of the documentary. HOLLYWOOD IN HAITI TO HELP CHILDREN IN NEED

Paul & Deborah Haggis, James Franco, Madeline Stowe, Josh Brolin & Diane Lane, Maria Bello & Bryn Mooser, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Michael Stahl David and others, in Haiti with N.P.H. – Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (Our Little Brothers and Sisters) for the inauguration of the first Rehabilitation Centre for disabled children in the country, and the launch of “Francisville – New Work City.”

Two-time Academy Award winner Paul Haggis went to the slums of Haiti last February to meet Father Richard Frechette, priest and doctor, who has been working with the children of Port Au Prince for over twenty years.

Haiti is one of the two poorest countries in the world. “Father Rick,” as he is known to the people of its massive slums, is the Head of N.P.H. – Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (Our Little Brothers and Sisters, Nos Petit Freres and Soeurs), a humanitarian organization founded in 1954.

In Haiti today, two hundred and fifty children die every week, most from easily preventable diseases. One child out of three dies before reaching the age of five. Of those who survive, one child out of two does not go to school. Seventy percent of its people are unemployed.

While in Haiti, Haggis visited several N.P.H. projects, including the orphanage that Father Rick founded twenty years ago, home to six hundred abandoned children, and the beautiful new pediatric hospital he built -- the largest in the Caribbean. He also spent time at Father Rick’s street schools in the slums, which provide an education and a hot meal a day to over 3.000 children, and NPH’s water distribution centre, which provides the only clean water available to thousands of people. Father Rick also built the only free mortuary and cemetery. As terrible as it sounds, until he did so, most poor parents were unable to bury their dead children, and their bodies were simply left on a hill, and as a result suffered terrible indignities.

Paul was also there to witness the beginning of construction of NPH’s rehabilitation centre for disabled children.

This December 3rd, a date internationally celebrated as World Day for Disability, Paul and a group of friends will return to Haiti for the inauguration of “Kay Saint Germaine – House of Little Angels,” the first rehab centre in the country for disabled children. The life of these children is especially difficult in Haiti. According to voodoo worship, the disabled are considered cursed. They are therefore shunned, often abandoned, or worse.

Those visiting on this occasion are doing so to support N.P.H. and Father Rick in spreading information and awareness about the plight of the handicapped children in Haiti. They will also attend the kick-off of a new project, Francisville, a site where small factories and a professional school will be built to produce basic goods such as bread, soap and shoes in order to provide training and jobs for the poor, as well as to create resources to at least partially sustain N.P.H. humanitarian projects in the country.

Joining the group of Americans will be a delegation of Italian donors and volunteers from Fondazione Francesca Rava – N.P.H. Italia, the organization that lead to the realization of Kay Saint Germaine and is now promoting Francisville.

The industry is changing...dramatically. Indies are not making the making the same impact as they're being swallowed whole by the huge marketing budgets of studio films. The internet has opened up a tremendous marketing channel, but technology has opened the door for so much product the market can barely stand the strain. Those pushing to make their mark in the industry are finding themselves between a rock and a rock. How to break into big budget. Well I tend to think that (and this is not such a poplar theme in other markets) that the market will correct itself. The music industry went through a free for all (or free fall depending on how you look at it) a few years ago. Did everyone become a hit music artist or producer overnight just because they had access to the equipment and the means to get product out. No. The cream rose to the top. And in some cases sunk very fast. Some of it was of course whipped cream and you know how long that lasts. So I tend to think the same way. Good content will rise, bad will fall and there will be a middle ground in between.

As far as marketing budgets that have ballooned out of control. We need the engine that drives the industry, but the machinery will change over time too. Less money from wall street= less money to compete. The cycle will repeat and indies will rise again. Not that there haven't been great ones that have happened despite the change. A list of fav's will be posted soon.

Writer's Strike

We've received a couple of comments on the writer's strike, so although we're not in an official capacity to comment we would like to give our take and on a more personal note my take on it. The writer's strike is officially over, but the ramifications I feel will be long lasting. I sat in on a panel when I started film school and one of the speakers was a huge director (won't name any names at this point). He said the most important people in filmmaking are the writers and the actors. The actors because they portray the vision and because they have the ability to have a project immediately "green lit" (the go ahead to have a project made). He went on to explain that the writers are vitally important because without them there would be no project to create. A bad script can never be a good movie no matter what director helms the project. Well that comment truly hit home when the writers went on strike and production came to a halt. TV shows finished showing what they had left in their reserve and that was it. Even now many shows have not been able to start production because the writers have to build up story lines. So what the director said was true, no writers, no projects.

That being said, since the internet has become more of a force, viewership on television has gone down quite a bit. Television is driven by advertising dollars. Advertising is driven by companies that want to address specific audiences to take notice of their products or services. If the viewers have shifted, the advertisers and more specifically companies want to shift the budget to where viewers will see their products or services. Writer's have a union that over the years have worked out deals that guarantee writers get a rate according to the whether a show gets picked up and how many times the show is broadcast. There was no specific deal set up for internet and since the internet has become a stronger force (they're broadcasting entire shows over the internet now), writer's wanted some of the revenue that comes from advertiser's that have committed or reallocated budgets according to internet viewership. Since this trend is increasing, the writers wanted to take advantage of the fact that their contracts were up for renewal and look after their future as the revenue stream shifts. The producer's countered that since the internet is not a proven revenue stream (without 3-5 years of market research) there should be a time allotment taken to study the shift before a deal is made.

Our take is that since the writers work is being broadcast, wherever it is being broadcast, they should get a slice of the pie. And since we have a company full of writers and we are also producers and directors we are fairly educated on the process of what it takes to complete a project. Thank goodness in the end they resolved the strike, because one of our favorite shows "HEROES" has been off the air for too long. The Klog and Rant is a communal effort and all posts must be approved by a majority at KijiK. It is meant to be as simple and painless as possible. To relay ideas, stories with as little influence as possible, without prejudice. But I wanted to relay a story that happened to me while I lived in Italy. One night I went out with some Italian friends, partying, playing, drinking and we ended up in the apartment of an Italian artist doing much of the same. Someone pulled out a guitar and began playing songs; old ones, new ones, The Eagles, Nirvana, even Tu Pac. And most in the room sang along, regardless if they understood the language...in perfect English. Hotel California, Smells Like Teen Spirit (we tried our best), and California Love, all in one night, cutting across genres, generations and boundaries in one evening (the drinks did help quite a bit). This experience stuck with me and I think about it from time to time and quite often in time. We were all from different countries, different backgrounds, even different continents. Africa, Asia, America(s) and more, but were unified that night. Now I don't feel music is the cure all for the worlds ill's, to the contrary there are so many issues that I would be hard pressed to even take a stab at where to start. What I do know is we were unified in that room, that night and it was magical, almost surreal. So, here is a video, an artist that was sent by a friend online to our Jango site. One man in a chair giving his soul. Jorge Ben fills the screen with less action, but more emotion and energy than the most visceral video game going today. At least in my humble opinion. He tells a compelling story and relays it with passion and conviction. It's not in my birth language, but I feel the energy translates regardless of language barriers. So thank you, my i-friend for reminding me of that night and what can happen when boundaries are cast aside and a few people from different backgrounds unify without prejudice.
